Research residency - Instituto Sacatar

We are pleased to announce that Fatim Soumaré will participate in a research residency at @institutosacatar in Bahia, Brazil, during May and June 2026.

Her research focuses on the global legacy of cotton and the ways in which its narrative can be expanded through collective effort. In collaboration with the local community in Bahia, Soumaré will explore experimental creations rooted in shared knowledge and the observation of local practices. Her research project aims to view cotton production as a linked, integrated system, prioritizing connection and community exchange as essential tools for creative transformation.

A Transcultural Artist Residency in Bahia, Brazil

Founded in 2001, Instituto Sacatar is the longest continuously-operating artist residency in Brazil. Since its inception, Sacatar has awarded fully-funded residencies to over 550 artists from all artistic disciplines, coming from more than 75 countries. The Instituto Sacatar is located on the island of Itaparica, across the bay from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
